Nikaa: “Joy” (Exclusive Interview)
What inspires your music?
I try and replicate my reality into a creative format that my audience can relate to and appreciate my lyricism and personal experiences. Whether it’s where I’ve grown up or my social experiences, I will always stay true to myself when creating.
How did you start your recording career?
I’ve always enjoyed singing and so when I was in my early teen’s around age 13 my mum decided to enrol me into a theatre school which also had a recording booth which the kids could use on a daily basis and from then on I’ve carried on with music and writing my own songs.
How did you come up with your single?
I wanted to write about experience that were really close to me and that everyone can relate to whatever age you are. I wanted to portray what I went through in a positive light and spread positivity through my lyricism and music.
What is your genre of music?
Jazz, Jazz fusion, Soul, R&B
Who are your influences?
My musical influences would definitely be Amy Winehouse, Etta James, Jill Scott and Jasmine Sullivan to name a few.
How do you define success?
Success is something that is personal. Every time I achieve a goal of mine that I have set, when I do eventually achieve it that defines success to me as I’ve gone and done what I set out to do.
What can we expect from you in 2021?
I have plans to release more singles with the hope of releasing my debut EP at the end of August/Early September. I also have gigs lined up so hopefully they go ahead so I can start performing properly again.
