Roy Hamilton III Produces Soul/Pop Single for Guordan Banks: "Be So Kind" (Exclusive Interview)
What inspires your music?
I draw inspiration from everywhere! Sometimes it’s an odd sound I hear when Im outside or something that I read. I really enjoy hearing peoples stories and I enjoy learning about the lives of the singers I work with.
How did you start your production career?
Technically, I was born into it! I started off working in our family business. I would attend business meeting with my parents when they would visit record labels and publishers to handle matters for my grandfathers estate. I would also help my dad in the recording studio when he would record his music! I just knew that I would be sitting in that producer seat one day and here I am today!
Next came my first production deal at 17 years old with Interscope Records and R. Kelly, where I learned how to produce songs for major labels. After that I signed with Jive Records and RCA Records for production deals and learned more and more about music from mentors like, Wayne Williams, Clive Calder, Teddy Riley and Babyface.
How did you come up with your single?
I was one of the very first people to recognize Guordan’s talent as a singer and songwriter. We decided to sign him to our publishing company and invest into his talent and the rest is history. When Guordan was working on his new album he asked me if I had anything unique I could contribute and I said, “Yes!” I sent him the instrumental for, “Be So Kind”. He immediately loved it and sent me the song in less than a week.
What is your genre of music?
I would have to say I’m a fusion producer, meaning I blend different elements of different genres to make unique productions.
Who are your influences?
My influences are Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Classical music, Reggae, Sam Cooke, World Music and Gospel.
How do you define success?
Every time I have an idea that comes to fruition that is success to me!
