Sam Robbins: Saying Amen

What inspires your music?

A lot of things inspire my music! I find that it comes and goes in periods. When I find a new artist, or when I move to a new area, or I move into a new space, or even when I meet someone new and see/hear something. Classic sounding music, like singer songwriters from the 1970’s, really inspires me. Something about the energy from that era just gets me.

How did you start your recording career?

I started when I was 16 – just recording in Garageband in my high school tech lab. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, and I basically can’t listen back to those tracks now! But after that experience, and the experience of releasing the music out in the world, I felt a spark. I just played a little bit every day, and tried to write a little every day.

How did you come up with your single?

I wrote “Saying Amen” on Christmas eve. I had never tried to write a political song. So many of my heroes write music about social justice and the world around them, but it always seemed like too big of a task to take on. “Saying Amen” came out easily though, because I wrote it as a letter to a friend. We all have someone like this in our lives, and social media has just amplified it.

What is your genre of music?

I like to say “classic singer songwriter” – In the vein of storyteller artists like James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot.

Who are your influences?

Classic writers! Like those I’ve listed above, but also more modern greats like John Mayer, Sara Bareilles and Jason Mraz.

How do you define success?

Success to me is to be able to continue doing what I enjoy – writing and performing – as much as possible. That is the bar for me, and whatever I do is aimed at continuing that.

What can we expect from you in 2020?

One more single, and some socially distanced touring! Hopefully an album in early 2021!
