Vera Kay Interview: Comatose
What inspires your music?
For me, music has always been a form of expression. Growing up, I found it difficult sometimes to express emotions or feelings, and the music was my outlet, whether it was by writing or listening. Music was always there for me in good and bad times. This inspired me to write songs that people can relate to sing along with and ultimately make them feel good.
How did you get your start as a band?
I had been writing original material for a while and wanted to put a band together to play some local shows in Boston. Me and my band mates Joey Ferretti, Kris Wong and Nick Thorpe all went to Berklee College of Music in Boston. Kris and Joey and I were all in a metal band our freshman year and after going our separate ways with that project, we came back together when I asked them to play in Vera Kay with me. Nick is a newer member and started with us a little under a year ago and we couldn't have had a better addition to the group. After releasing our first single and EP and getting on the road for our first tour together, we really had so much fun.
What is your genre of music?
I would consider us an alternative rock band with dark electronic pop textures. Our first EP Pink Roses is a punk rock sound and ultimately what we're about, for our more recent material we've dived more into that dark synth driven sound with a rock edge and we love the result.
How do you describe success?
For me success would be described as being able to do what I love. Getting my music in front of people who will connect with it and feel something from it. Being able to perform and make music and connecting with fans. Nothing could make us happier.
What can we expect from you in 2020?
2020 is going to be a big year for Vera Kay. We have new music, working on a new video, a tour in the spring. We have so much more to come, and we're very excited to share with everyone.
