Ria Jade: "Good Bad Decisions" (Exclusive Interview)
What inspires your music?
I am inspired by everything and everyone around me. I've written breakup songs about personal relationships and a tune that was inspired by the movie "Fatal Attraction." Sometimes, lyrics and melodies just come to me while I'm at the bus stop waiting to go to work. I think one of the most beautiful things about art is that you can find it anywhere, even when you're not looking.
What is your song called? How did you come up with it?
My newest single, "Good Bad Decisions," is your not-so-typical breakup song. Following my deeply personal acoustic single "Sage" that displays all my vulnerability and heartbreak, this sibling rather showcases a more fiery side of overcoming heartbreak. The meaning behind an art piece, in my opinion, is all in the eye of the beholder, or rather, the ears of the beholder. While some may see this song as a sweet, upbeat story of a scorned, vengeful lover, I see this song as self empowerment after a fallout in the form of success.
What is your genre of music?
Many people I have worked with consider my genre to be rock and I am heavily influenced by rock music as it is my favourite genre, but I am also influenced by 80s pop and rock, R&B, blues, and folk. I consider my more upbeat material inspired mostly by DOROTHY, Bishop Briggs, and Two Feet, and my slower material to be influenced by Fleetwood Mac and James Bay.
How do you describe success?
Success to me is defined by the truest form of happiness. For me, that is knowing that I have touched someone in some way. When I am surrounded by loved ones, I feel successful. When I know I have made a positive impact on someone through a random act of kindness, I feel successful. When people reach out to me and say they relate to my music and it acts as a vessel of universal emotions, I feel successful.
What can we expect from you in 2020?
In 2020, I have tons of new material I am looking to put out. Ultimately, I would love to release a second EP hopefully by the end of the year. I am finally at home with my sound and I'm looking forward to share it with everyone, whether it be a live performance or personal listening at home.
