Alexandra Beck: "Mixed Signals" (Exclusive Interview)

Could you tell us a bit about yourself, and when your passion for singing began?

I first started to love singing when I was in Grade 1. Back then, my voice wasn’t as mature as it is now. I remember how I loved school music class so much, as well as singing at school assemblies, and school Christmas concerts. My mom saw my passion, and the next year she put me in a Classical Kid's Choir, and piano lessons.

What inspired you to write your new single, “Mixed Signals?” What themes does the song touch upon?

It touches upon themes of Feminism, Heartbreak, Anger, Pain, and today's rising phenomena of Non-Committal Men. Slightly controversial theme- but my song touches on the rising phenomenon of young Millennial & Gen Z women, talking so much amongst ourselves- but for some reason, we feel scared to discuss personal matters with men, and new partners. Non-committal men! This song is mainly inspired by the time I fell for someone, who wasn't ready for love, but they deceived me by making me think otherwise. In the beginning, I believed he was the perfect boyfriend, but  he bolted as soon as things started to get more serious. This is the classic type of young man who exists in today’s society- with Dating Apps, and an abundant amount of dating choices in big cities. Usually, they deceive you into thinking they want love- doing all the right things at the start. But when you take a minute to step back, and think about it, they really just hit you up when they are lonely, and need to be sexually satisfied. These guys aren't really concerned with your needs in the long term, but they have become masters of trickery. Ladies, be smart out there!

What do you believe makes your music unique?

I have a really unique sound that I'm proud of. I'm a power vocalist with a very edgy tone. My song writing is really honest. I like to say things how they are. I have had a lot of people tell me that I should focus on sounding more feminine, more sweet, but I believe that these strong parts of my tone are still feminine and beautiful- just in a more unconventional way!

Growing up, who are some artists that inspired you?

I loved listening to all the Pop Stars of the 90's and early 2000's. My favourites were Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, and Avril Lavigne. I learned a lot about pop music, by listening to their first released records when I was a young girl. I definitely aspired to be a power vocalist after listening to those three artists.

I remember Rihanna started to become huge when I started dancing hip hop at 9 years old. Pon de Replay, or any of her songs, were such a jam, and made me want to go to my dance classes because my dance teacher created so many combos to her work.

My mom always played great Jazz artists around the house at Christmas time. I fell in love with artists like Nat King Cole, Diana Krall, Norah Jones and Holly Cole.

In my teens, I delved into Michael Jackson, Vanessa Carlton, Jojo, a bit of Country, and many other artists, as well.

Where do you see the future of music going in the next few years?

I think the Production Trends are going to shift towards EDM, honestly! Power vocalists are coming back too! Some retro sounds are also really making a comeback- like Dua Lipa vibes.
