Jessica Baker: "Ashes" (Exclusive Interview)
What inspires your music?
Pretty much everything in life inspires my music. We are human and we all go through the ups and downs of this life. I just want to be able to share hope and encouragement to anyone who listens. If I can inspire someone to either continue following their dreams or just find the light at the end of the tunnel , through music, then I’m satisfied. That’s what it’s about for me.
How did you start your recording career?
I’ve recorded off and on throughout my life, but to release my first single I went to someone I felt had the experience and that was Roy Hamilton III. I released my first ever single Ashes with him and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
What is your (EP/Single) called? How did you come up with it?
My single is called Ashes. One day I was at my keyboard and just felt really inspired and started to reflect on my life. Where I’ve been, where I was and where I wanted to be. In life, we all make mistakes, because we’re human and I realized instead of regretting or lamenting in them, it made me to become who I am. We all have to experience life in our own right, regardless of what people think or say. The end result is did you learn and grow from it? So, that’s basically where that song came from. Also coming from a faith perspective, there is a scripture that talks about receiving a “crown of beauty instead of ashes “. I took that as sometimes the hard parts or trials in our lives can actually be beautiful if we learn and grow from them. We become stronger.

Pop, Gospel, inspirational
Who are your influences?
I first heard Jaci Velasquez on the radio when I was 13 and was like woah! I want to be her! So she is definitely one of my major influences along with Whitney Houston , Elvis Presley, and Sia
How do you define success?
I define success as being totally content in your purpose and thriving in it! Doing what you love and what drives you while also making a living from that would be the total dream. That is being successful.
What can we expect from you in 2020?
I’m trying to wrap up some other singles to release and always writing of course for the next song. In the meantime I also like to scratch my creative itch and appear in commercials and film projects.
